parameter problem in sql2005 sp

in sql2005 store procedure is accepting the varchar value which is more than the parameter's varchar value size it is not giving any exception error but removes the remaining character from right side

Example :

Table

-

create table employee

(Empname Varchar(5), EmpNo Int)

Procedure

create procedure test (@.para1 Varchar(5))

as

SELECT * FROM employee WHRE empNAME=@.PARA1

Execution

--

exec test 'ABCDEFGH'

it consider only 'ABCDE' and ignores remaining character without giving any exception error.

Thanks,

It is the specification. Not only in 2005 earlier versions also use the same specification.

But in sql server 2005 you can overcome this issue using Varchar(max) it never truncate the value.

Declare @.A varchar(1), @.B varchar(Max);

Set @.A = '1234' --Truncated value

Set @.B = '1234' --Never Truncate the value

Select @.A, @.B

Note:

The character length is only validated on Insert & Update statement.

Parameter maximum string size question

Does anyone happen to know what is the maximum string size that can be passed in a parameter w/o it truncating or throwing an error?

Thank you in advance,

As it is implemented as a .NET type (System.String) it could take theoretically up to 2^31-1 chars, but passing the parameter through the webservice or the URL will make you only to have your URL expanded to the maximum of 2083 chars to support all the methods like GET / POST / Webservices.

Parameter boxes

hey there

Is there a way to reduce the parameter box size.

I am using a date/time picker so want that to be the prominent part for the user?

at the moment it shows like this

StartDate (inputbox) date/time picker

if that inputbox could either be greyed out or smaller?

cheers

You cannot make changes/customize the standard report toolbar.|||oh ok thanks

Parameter box does not autosize while Multi Select.

Hi all Gurus
In reports when I set the Multi Select option for parameters then size
of parameter box does not increase according to Length of parameter
string value. It remains fix at default values and I have to scroll
horizontally to see full parameter string , this is very tuff because
our parameter strings are very large.
Is there anyway to overcome this problem?

As far as I know, there is not. Of course, you could develop an
ASP.NET application that would allow for you to have more flexibility.

It sounds like you are refreshing the data in your grid for each page that you navigate to. The changes that you make are not sent to SQL Server until you tell your application to send them. If you don't send the changes to SQL Server before you refresh your result set, then anything you changed in the data grid will get thrown away.

Paging of Records

Hi all,

I have a stored procedure which takes 4 parameters

@.Page Numeric, @.Size Numeric, @.SQL VARCHAR(75), @.COUNT = 0 NUMERIC OUTPUT

In @.SQL variable a SQL querry is passed on which I don't know. Based on this sql querry page and the size I have to return the recordset with limited records and total rows in the fetched from SQL Querry as OUT parameter. Please help me out.

Thanx in advance

AmitI was doing paging like this:

-SP does have parameters - show page#, lines per page;
-create temporary table with identity;
-insert data to temporary table (include sorting);
-select and return page (not big deal if you know page# )
- select and return totals for columns (if it needs)
- output parameter- total pages.

It is very simple and very effective method (it does have potential problems but it works for many cases).|||Hi Snail,

Thank you for your reply. But I think one thing you are missing is that we have a dynamic querry. So please consider this point and help me out.

I had dynamic query too. I will try to find code for this sp and post it.

Anyway check this query - how it is possible to create temporary table:

SELECT *,IDENTITY(int, 1, 1) AS newid

FROM sysobjects|||Check this code: sp and asp page with paging. It is a little complicated but you could find the main idea.

Paging file size for server with 128GB memory

Hi,

Anyone knows what the size should the Paging File be for a 8 P 16 Core Opteron server with 128GB memory installed? The server will be running SQL 05 Ent and IIS, on top of Win2k3 R2 x64 Ent.

Please also give the reason for that size.

Regards,

dong

On a SQL Server you want the page file size to be as small as possible so that SQL Server will be using real memory instead of slower virtual memory. SQL Servers are resource-rich centralized beasts. That's one of the reasons they are faster than a desktop database or btrieve library. The optimal size would be 0 but you need a pagefile big enough to hold any memory dumps your server might create. If you can handle just getting mini-dumps which are just 64K, you could set your pagefile very very small. Otherwise, you need a pagefile at least the same size as your memory size, which sucks. Its been back to SQL 4.2 since I actually used a memory dump, so I generally turn them off. You can always turn them back on if your machine starts acting screwey.

Paging File size

I hope these are pretty basic SQL Server management questions. I'm running a SP that uses a lot of memory. The server has about 8GB and it uses 7.95GB. When the memory usage goes up, so does the size of the paging file. I'm assuming the page file grows so it can write the memory contents to disk in the case of a crash. How necessary is this? It seems like any advantage I'd gain from working out of memory is lost because I'm working off the drive too.

Can I/should I turn this "feature" off?

Thanks!

Brian

Paging file is used to swap files quickly in and out of RAM. The system can't possibly keep everything in RAM that it ever needs. So it swaps in use files back and forth between RAM and the pagefile as needed. It's a secondary backup to RAM, sort of.

The paging file is growing because if SQL Server is using 7.95 GB of RAM of 8 available, there's not enough RAM left for the operating system to function, and it is forced to rely on the paging file for its normal operations.

A general rule of thumb for a SQL Server is that the paging file should be at least double the amount of RAM. So if you have 8 GB of RAM, the paging file should be 16 GB ... a preferably on a different disk than any of the SQL files. Set the paging file to a hard size, don't let Windows manage your paging file.

If your server has 4 or more GB of RAM, you should reserve at least 1 GB of RAM for the OS. You do this by setting the maximum amount of memory that SQL Server can use to the total amount - 1 GB. So for 8GB of RAM, set SQL to use a maximum of 7 GB.

If 7.95 GB of RAM are being used though not necessarily by SQL Server, the OS may be forcing SQL Server to give up memory and forcing it to page. Make sure that SQL Server has been granted "Lock pages in memory" rights in the group policy editor.

Robert,

The thing that bothers me is the files grow simultaneously. They both start out below 1GB and both grow at approximately the same rate. That is why I wondered if Windows was preparing for a memory dump by keeping an "Image" of memory in case of a crash. I haven't used this setting since XP, but assume it's still around in 2003. Although I think it's disabled by default.

Whatever the case, I'll assume that the behavior is normal for now. I have implemented a couple of your suggestions.

Thanks for the help.

Pagination with SP

I'd like to write an SP with parameters that returns specified groups rows
in ordered groups of arbitrary size. Kind of a "sliding" TOP. Like, show me
the first 40 items in a list, show me the 4th group of 40 items in a list,
show me the Nth group of X items, etc. I see this kind of thing all the time
and would prefer not to have to deal with the pagination in VB or ASP, or
get all the rows and then filter out what I don't want to display.
So, I'd like to pass in to the SP parameters for the size of each grouping
and an ordinal for the group I wanted.
CREATE PROCEDURE pagination_sp
@.ordinal int,
@.groupsize int
AS
SELECT LastName, FirstName
FROM People
ORDER BY LastName, FirstName

Page Width view AS default

Hello all,

When viewing a report, there is an option in the left corner for the size ie. 100%, 150%, page width, whole page etc from the dropdown list.

I was wondering is there a way to make the ''Page Width" option the default view for a particular report or site ?

There is no way to set the default zoom within a report. However, if you can call your reports from a URL, you can use the Zoom parameter and specify Page Width as the value. See Using URL Access Parameters for more information:

Page SPlits and finding out Record size and Page Info

I am trying to determine if pages in a table are close to full and likely to
page split.
Using DBCC SHOWCONTIG ( table) WITH TABLERESULTS, ALL_INDEXES, ALL_LEVELS
I get MinimumRecordSize, MaximumRecordSize only for the indexes How can I
get this information on the data itself? If an update is going to change a
the average record size by increasing it 15 bytes, and the avg is 500 bytes,
I would assume that there are on average 8 records per page and the increase
would push one record out, or 1 in 8, so a 25 million record table would
encounter 3,125,000 page splits. With a clustered index, I believe we have
been experiencing some bad performance issues and turning off clustering on
the index and adjusting the free space per page, hopefully will help with
the updates.
Is there anyway to reorganize the data so that it is only using say 60% of
the file pages so that updates are less likely to page split?I may have fired too soon.
My response refers to Index Organization. Not data itself.
Cheers,
GAJ

If the customer computer set "letter" report is printing in "letter" format
in spite of layout settings.
If You're famouse with the Active report it has "printer setings" on
development page, I'd like something similar.

Page Size as a Report Parameter?

This might be a newbie question, but can the page size be set as a report
parameter?
Thanks!
MichaelNo you can't. When wondering what you can set dynamically you can tell by
seeing if it accepts an expression. This does not accept an expression so
there is no way to set it with a report parameter.

My dilema is that I need to be able to allow the user to change the page
size/target printer in IE. I have that all figured out (what a pain getting
page/preview settings), but I now need to control RS from IE. The only way I
see how, based on your comments, is to dynamically create the RDL on the fly.
I am already exploring that at the moment for the reporting engine anyway,
but it would be nice NOT to have to generate RDL files every time the page
settings are changed in IE.
On a side note, I was also thinking of having RS generate the HTML minus
page breaks and handle the printer/page settings in IE against the raw HTML,
but I don't see a clean way to get the table header rows to repeat. (it
appears I would also have to create my own handler for RS.)
Converging IE and RS is a pain right now, but it will be a great solution if
I can get this last piece figured out. If you know of any other direction to
take on this, I would appreciate your comments.
Thanks again!

Is that a way to set my page size as a relative (px,em,ex,%) lenght instead
of an absolute (in,pt,pc,mm,cm) lenght?Hi Dilworth,
Welcome to the MSDN newsgroup.
As for the SQL Reporting service's report, its page size's unit must be of
physical units. And the default size unit is based on the user/machine's
locale setting, and we can customize it to other units, however, they must
be of physical unit types.

Page Size and Optimum Cluster Size

I would like to know the Page Size of SQL Server 2005.
If we implement SQL Server 2005 on SAN, what is the optimum size of the
cluster in NTFS format ? What is the relationship between the Page Size and
the cluster (Allocation Unit) size ?
Thanks"Jason" <Jason@.discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in

On SQL Server 2000 the recommendation I've seen is 64k (One extent), and I
do think it is the same in SQL Server 2005.
One extent contains 8 pages. By using 64k allocation units, (in combination
with the same block size in the raid set/san) you have only one IO
operation on one single disk to read/write whole extent, thus reducing the
number of IOs when performing IO-intensive operations like a table scan.

Hi,
how can I see the page size of one table?
thanks,
Mestre
Page sizes are fixed at 8192 bytes.
Is that what you're after ... i think not.

Page Size

Hi,
In crystal reports, I can define page size (letter size or legal size) and
page orientation (Langscap or Prortrait) so the preview exactly looks like
the final print.
Is it possible to do that in MSRS?
To re-word the question, How can I define the page size (letter size or
legal size) and page orientation (Langscap or Prortrait) at design time in
Microsoft Reporting services ?
Thank you,
AlanIn VSNET, open a report in designer, click menu "Report->Report
Properties...", then "Layout" tab.
